A bit dated and the author's tendency to want to draw comparisons to American democracy was a bit odd. This is not terribly detailed but covers the highlights of the life of King Charles I. I picked this up after reading a book on the English civil war hoping to get more insight on the person of Charles but really just ended up with a high level overview of what I had read about the war. It does cover a bit about his childhood and the description of his final days of captivity leading up to his execution was very interesting.Product details

Makers Of History Charles I Jacob Abbott Books Reviews
Charles I was a privileged and self centered ruler who nearly broke his country. Abbott explains this king's background and tells why and how events unfold. He also clarifies social customs and political workings that differ from ours.
His style is clear and interesting. This book is well researched and detailed enough to interest the history student yet is smooth enough to read as a novel.
Had a feeling of being there at the same time a removed- covered the territory from a distance like a WWII bomber pilot
Abbott writes rather old-fashioned but good English. He has done his research well. This history kept me fascinated until the very end and filled in some blanks I did not know.
Because of the overly simplified writing this was difficult to read. I don't know when it was written but its tone isn't scholarly. Its geared to school students.
